Sport and Tourism Youth Foundation
Looking at Sport Tourism from a different perspective has proven a worthy reward for the former International and England Rugby Player, Lawrence Dallaglio. Involved in some of the highest profile sports charity events in the UK raising millions through Sport, Lawrence set up The Dallaglio Foundation in 2009 and subsequently the Dallaglio Cycleslam. Currently in its 3rd year, the cycling fundraiser has raised hundreds of thousands for the Dallaglio Foundation and the flagship social inclusion project – Rugby for Change.
The youth engagement and social inclusion programme engages young people from predominantly marginalised areas of society to use rugby as a vehicle to develop social skills, self-esteem, discipline, team spirit and positive pathways into employment. Social Impact outcomes for the Dallaglio Foundation Rugby for Change Programme (2013) highlights 83% of young people assessed were less aggressive, violent or confrontational in school and that 76% agreed that they would stay involved in rugby even after the programme finished. The programme has been a model for success resulting in reduced rates of re-offending youths by changing mindsets and promoting sport as a catalyst for change.
Prior to cycling from Treviso to Twickenham on the Dallaglio Cycle Slam 2014, Lawrence will be speaking at the European Sport Tourism Summit in Thomond Park Stadium, Limerick on 15th May.
