ImageTOURISM AND SPORT THE PERFECT COMBINATION, THOMAS COOK IRONMAN IN ALCUDIA, MALLORCA
atletes will chalenge each other in one of the hardest sportsevents of all : the Ironman 70.3.

The strong atletes or up for a race of 1, 9km swimming (1, 2 miles), 90 km cycling (56 miles) and 21, 1 km running (13, 1 miles). The total distance covered in the race is 70.3miles, that is where the name of the event is based on, which is actualy a half-Ironman.

The idea to organize a triathlon was born out of a discussion in between some north-american marines, on which sport would be the hardest and most challenging : swimming, cycling or running.

Commander John Collins, serving in Honolulu Hawaïi, proposed to combine the three hardest races of Hawaïi in one : the “Waikiki Rough Water Swim (3, 8 km swimming in open sea), the “Around Ohahu Bike Ride” (180 km cycling) and the “Honolulu Marathon” (42.195m running).

The goal was : surviving! They decided that the first one to arrive, would get the title of Ironman, because he had proven to be the strongest of all.

On the 18th of february 1978, 15 friends participated in the first ironman, 12 arrived and winner was the 28 year old Gordon Haller who arrived after 11hours, 46 min and 58 seconds of race.

So the first Triathlon was organized. It became an Olympic sport during the games in Sydney 2000. Only the events organised by the WTC (World Triathlon Corporation) can be called “Ironman”.

This year, over 60 events are organised and count for a classification in the World Championship that will take place in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada, on september 7th.
